Position Description / Vacancy Announcement
Short Term Technical Assistance
Location: Accra and Sekondi-Takoradi
Contract Duration: Two months
Reports To: Acting WASH-UP Director
Background:
Global Communities (formerly, CHF International) is implementing a three-year USAID funded Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme for the Urban Poor (WASH-UP). The WASH-UP Project's goal is to improve the Urban Poor's access to clean, reliable and affordable water and improved sanitation services. To facilitate effective implementation of this project, Global Communities requires the services of a GIS Technical Assistant. The GIS Technical Assistant is expected to work closely with WATSAN and GIS Officers to develop an up-to-date GIS database of existing Water and Sanitation facilities in project communities.
- Map out existing water facilities in project communities including GWCL water connections, Boreholes, Hand dug wells, Water Kiosks and Fire hydrants.
- Map out existing sanitation facilities in project communities including Water Closets, Pour flush, Bio-fil, Pan/Bucket Latrine, Pit latrine, Institutional Latrine, Public toilets, KVIP and VIP, water pipe lines and Earth drains.
- Create ESRI shapefiles of existing water and sanitation facilities in project communities using Ghana National Reference system (meters).
- Prepare Excel sheet containing the Geographic coordinates (WGS 84) of the water and sanitation facilities in the project communities.
- Prepare and print A0 maps depicting the existing situation.
- Prepare and submit detailed project report.
Required Skills or Experience
Training And Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in GIS, geography, computer science, engineering, cartography, or related field. OR related work experience.
- Two to four years of experience in the use of Arc Info, ArcView, MS Access applications, or other related computer experience.
- Additional two years directly related experience may substitute for each year of education (up to two years of education) if there is demonstrated knowledge, ability and skills to perform the work.
- Two years' experience in the use Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
Knowledge And Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, including programming procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of map creation and related concepts.
- Knowledge and ability to use a personal computer to prepare maps, enter and maintain data, create maps and reports, and search for and compile data.
- Ability to work with local government officials and the general public.
